LAAPOA is a non-partisan organization and candidates are endorsed based on their positions on issues. We are looking for honesty, not a perfect score. When deciding on an endorsement we will consider your viability as a candidate along with your positions on the issues. This questionnaire will remain confidential throughout your entire campaign, whether we choose to endorse you or not.

EMPLOYEE RIGHTS AND BENEFIT ISSUES

What is your position on pension reform?(Required)

For nearly 30 years, every law enforcement agency in the US has operated under the terms of the United States Supreme Court ruling known as “Graham v. Connor.” That US Supreme Court ruling indicates that a law enforcement officer can use “reasonable” force to effect the arrest of a suspect and further states that the "reasonableness" of a particular use of force must be judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, rather than with the 20/20 vision of hindsight. Some California legislators have undertaken efforts to eliminate the “Graham v. Connor” standard and to replace it with a “California only” standard that would invite a review of all incidents with the “20/20 vision of hindsight,” in complete opposition to the US Supreme Court ruling. What are your feelings on this issue and how would you vote on any legislation that proposes to change the ruling of the US Supreme Court?

Peace officers have special workers' compensation presumptions and death benefits because of the serious danger they face in performing their jobs. The legislature has provided enhanced benefits in recognition of these dangers. What are your thoughts on these workers' compensation presumptions and death benefits, and do you feel any changes should be made?(Required)

PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUES

Proposition 47 changed numerous felonies into misdemeanors, including theft of a firearm and possession of date rape drugs. What are your thoughts on AB 109, Propositions 47 and 57, and their impact on public safety?(Required)

In the last couple years or so, politicians at all levels of government have demonized police labor unions and their members representing hard-working law enforcement officers. These same public safety officers place themselves in harm’s way to protect their neighborhoods and communities, but are being held up as objects of scorn and ridicule by these politicians who cite the cost of their hard-earned pensions and benefits as the reason for the government’s fiscal woes. What have you done, or will you do to halt these politically motivated attacks on public safety unions and how will you stand up for these organizations?(Required)
