Major Election Victories Signal New Era for Public Safety in Los Angeles

LAAPOA is proud to announce several significant victories from the 2024 election that will help reinforce our commitment to enhancing public safety, supporting our communities and providing better benefits for our members.

As the critical November 5 election approached, LAAPOA presented our official voter guide listing the candidates and measures that aligned with the interests of public safety professionals and the communities we serve. Members who followed this guide helped secure meaningful outcomes that will shape the future of law enforcement throughout the state.

One of the most notable wins came in the L.A. County district attorney race, with Nathan Hochman overwhelmingly defeating George Gascón. For years, LAAPOA has sounded the alarm on Gascón’s dangerous pro-criminal policies, including his elimination of cash bail, ending the use of sentencing enhancements and refusing to prosecute juveniles as adults, regardless of the crime or circumstances. Hochman’s victory will help restore independence, honesty and integrity to prevent crime, protect public safety and ensure justice is served to all L.A. County residents.

Another critical outcome of this election is the passage of L.A. City Ballot Measure FF. With this historic measure now approved, LAAPOA members will have the same public safety pension as all the other peace officers in the city. This is a long-overdue decision that will benefit members and their families for years to come.

The election of Adrin Nazarian to L.A. City Council District 2 will also go a long way toward improving community well-being. His commitment to keeping illegal firearms off the streets and ensuring local law enforcement has the resources it needs resonates with LAAPOA members and community members who have long been calling for more comprehensive safety measures in our neighborhoods.

Additionally, Heather Hutt’s decisive victory in District 10 is a triumph for residents seeking safer, more equitable communities. With over 30 years in public service, Hutt has shown a deep commitment to addressing homelessness, building equitable parks and prioritizing community-based resources. Her focus on creating safe, family-friendly neighborhoods aligns with LAAPOA’s mission to support public safety and foster environments where law enforcement can effectively serve.

“This election marks a key turning point for public safety in Los Angeles,” LAAPOA President Marshall McClain says. “The passage of Measure FF and the success of our endorsed candidates is a clear message from voters that they want leaders and policies that value community safety and put law enforcement first.”
