As we embrace the Thanksgiving season, many of us are reflecting on what we’re grateful for while preparing to reconnect with friends and family. This year, the tradition of travel will continue in full force, with millions hitting the roads and skies to share a holiday meal with loved ones. However, with record travel numbers expected, it’s crucial to prioritize safety for a joyous and stress-free celebration.
The Automobile Club of Southern California projects 6.58 million SoCal residents will head 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday travel period, a 2.8% increase over last year’s record number of travelers. Throughout the country, AAA forecasts that 71.1 million Americans will travel by car over the holiday, an increase of 1.3 million people compared to last year. To minimize delays and maximize time with those you care about, AAA advises departing early, particularly before 10 a.m., on peak travel days.
With so many travelers navigating congested roads, airports and train stations, the potential for disruptions — and criminal activity — rises. LAAPOA reminds all travelers to stay vigilant and follow these key safety practices to ensure a secure journey and holiday season.
- Know before you go: Research your route and destination ahead of time. Be aware of local crime trends, road closures or potential hazards along your journey. Sign up for travel alerts from trusted sources, such as law enforcement agencies or traffic apps.
- Secure your home: Before leaving, ensure all doors, windows and gates are locked. Consider using timers for lights and a trusted neighbor to collect your mail to give the impression someone is home.
- Be mindful of your belongings: Keep your luggage, wallets and electronic devices within sight at all times. Avoid displaying high-value items, such as laptops or jewelry, which may attract thieves.
- Avoid oversharing: Refrain from posting about your travel on social media until you’ve returned home. Sharing detailed itineraries can make your home a target for burglars while you’re away.
- Prepare for emergencies: You can never be too prepared when traveling. Consider carrying a small first-aid kit and basic supplies, including snacks, water and blankets, especially for long drives. Save important numbers, such as roadside assistance, on your phone.
- Secure your digital presence: Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi at airports, hotels or rest stops. Avoid accessing sensitive accounts like banking apps unless connected to a secure network or VPN.
Delays and inconveniences are part of travel, especially during the holidays. A kind and understanding attitude will go a long way toward making the experience more enjoyable for you, fellow travelers and the employees working to keep things running smoothly.
This season is an opportunity to acknowledge the law enforcement officers who sacrifice time with their own families to ensure the safety of others. From safeguarding roads and airports to protecting parks and public spaces, these brave men and women work tirelessly throughout the holidays to keep our communities secure.
“This Thanksgiving, we encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate the unseen sacrifices made by officers who work tirelessly to ensure the community’s safety,” LAAPOA President Marshall McClain says. “While many gather around the table with loved ones, our members stand ready to protect our community and make sure everyone enjoys the holiday. We are deeply grateful for their courage, resilience and commitment, as well as for the continued support of those who value public safety. Let this season remind us all to share kindness, show gratitude and come together as a community.”
This is a time to not only count our blessings, but also share them with others. On Giving Tuesday on December 3, we encourage you to support the Los Angeles Airport Police Athletics & Activities League (LAAPAAL). This nonprofit enriches our community through athletics, education and charity events.
You can also contribute to PORAC Fund a Hero campaigns to assist peace officers and their families impacted by catastrophic events. There are several brothers and sisters in blue who are going through difficult times right now, and a small donation could go a long way toward making the holidays brighter for them and their families.
Let’s make this Thanksgiving about gratitude, generosity and safe travels. By preparing, staying vigilant and helping those in need, we can ensure a happy holiday season for everyone.
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at LAAPOA!
