This annual event is once again hosted by the Los Angeles Airport Police Athletics & Activities League, in partnership with LAAPOA, Los Angeles World Airports and the Association of Airport Employees, with proceeds benefiting the Tommy Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund. Officer Scott died heroically on April 29, 2005, while protecting the aviation community from a man intent on crashing a vehicle into an airplane on the LAX airport runway.

Still missed: Officer Tommy Scott, EOW April 29, 2005

In 2015, to memorialize Tommy on the 10th anniversary of his death, the run was transformed. What had been an informal perimeter run conducted mostly by law enforcement officers was expanded into a full-fledged community event, with USATF-certified 5K, 10K and half-marathon courses. Last year’s event drew more than 700 runners, and well over 1,000 are expected this time around. An inspirational opening ceremony will kick off the race at the start/finish line at LAX Fire Station No. 5, with participation from civic and agency leaders. Awards will be presented to the top finishers, with custom-designed medals for all those crossing the finish line.

“Although the loss of Tommy still hurts, even after more than a decade, this run is intended to celebrate his life and share with the larger community the values that he stood for,” says LAAPOA President Marshall McClain. “We also continue his legacy by growing the scholarship fund. Helping young people achieve their dreams through education would have made Tommy incredibly proud.”
